As a manager and a teacher/trainer one of the biggest challenges was motivating my staff and students. Often I have felt more like a Cheer Leader than a manager or teacher. Now as a mother I can see my Cheer Leader/Motivator role is going to continue for a while. However this has given me ample insight into how to find the root of anyone's motivation. It is different for everyone.
Sure you can motivate people with money, bonuses or special rewards
upon achievement of a task. However the greatest way to motivate anyone is to
engage them in activities they are passionate about.
Before we get stuck into what your goals are, you need to be very in tune with :
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
Some people are motivated to ACTION in a bid to change their
current circumstances. This is a great motivator. Think about it, what would ENTICE
you into ACTION?
The promise of:
The promise of:
- Freedom?
- Travel?
- Time with friends & family?
- A new home?
- A fulfilling job?
- A child?
- A new wardrobe?
- To look in the mirror and be satisfied?
You can MOTIVATE yourself with BIG or SMALL GOALS. However, the important factor is that they are ACHIEVABLE.
So WHAT IS MOTIVATION & DRIVE and why do some people seem to possess it and others do not?
It is best to go back to basics to unravel your own
MOTIVATION. Since the beginning of time humans have possessed a set of basic needs. In business or management this is called Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
Here I have created a diagram to show the hierarchy of needs, on the right side I have explained how these may link to your life goals. The base of the triangle shows how we all start with basic needs and as each of these levels are achieved we move on to the higher need, and so and so on. Therefore based on this philosophy the goal in LIFE is to work your way through them and achieve Self Transcendence.

Next Blog ...Goals!
My next blog post will be on the subject of how to create an inspiring set of goals. We will base these upon the above hierarchy of needs.Unfortunately, I wish someone had shown me this 20 years ago when I was starting out in my career. However, about 5 years ago an amazing trainer and financial planner sat me down and shared a useful secret when setting goals, that I am sure he will be happy for me to share with you. It was:
- When you write your goals don't just right what you want to do by when.
- Instead also include, how you want to feel?
- Include words and quotes that inspire you.
- Include pictures, photos and images of your goals or influences
- Write down specific dates by which you will achieve goals
In the meantime read over the hierarchy of needs and start to jot down some ideas in preparation.
