HOW DO I GET MOTIVATED?

succeed poster

As a manager and a teacher/trainer one of the biggest challenges was motivating my staff and students. Often I have felt more like a Cheer Leader than a manager or teacher. Now as a mother I can see my Cheer Leader/Motivator role is going to continue for a while. However this has given me ample insight into how to find the root of anyone's motivation. It is different for everyone.

Sure you can motivate people with money, bonuses or special rewards upon achievement of a task. However the greatest way to motivate anyone is to engage them in activities they are passionate about.
Personal motivation 'to reach your goals' requires you to tap into exactly this.

Before we get stuck into what your goals are,  you need to be very in tune with :
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Some people are motivated to ACTION in a bid to change their current circumstances. This is a great motivator. Think about it, what would ENTICE you into ACTION?
The promise of:

  • Freedom?
  • Travel?
  • Time with friends & family?
  • A new home?
  • A fulfilling job?
  • A child?
  • A new wardrobe?
  • To look in the mirror and be satisfied?

You can MOTIVATE yourself with BIG or SMALL GOALS. However, the important factor is that they are ACHIEVABLE.

So WHAT IS MOTIVATION & DRIVE and why do some people seem to possess it and others do not?

It is best to go back to basics to unravel your own MOTIVATION. Since the beginning of time humans have possessed a set of basic needs. In business or management this is called Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

Here I have created a diagram to show the hierarchy of needs, on the right side I have explained how these may link to your life goals. The base of the triangle shows how we all start with basic needs and as each of these levels are achieved we move on to the higher need, and so and so on. Therefore based on this philosophy the goal in LIFE is to work your way through them and achieve Self Transcendence.

With an understanding of the hierarchy of needs it is much easier to move on to creating a set of goals for yourself and your future.

Next Blog ...Goals!

My next blog post will be on the subject of how to create an inspiring set of goals. We will base these upon the above hierarchy of needs.

Unfortunately, I wish someone had shown me this 20 years ago when I was starting out in my career. However, about 5 years ago an amazing trainer and financial planner sat me down and shared a useful  secret when setting goals, that I am sure he will be happy for me to share with you. It was:

  • When you write your goals don't just right what you want to do by when.
  • Instead also include, how you want to feel?
  • Include words and quotes that inspire you.
  • Include pictures, photos and images of your goals or influences
  • Write down specific dates by which you will achieve goals
I will explain this in detail and provide examples (even from my own personal set of goals to help you).

In the meantime read over the hierarchy of needs and start to jot down some ideas in preparation.

Get motivated And Enhance Your Life

Success

Education, learning and helping people grow are my passions. I have been working in adult education in the business field for more than 15 years. Sadly I have seen far too many people simply not participating in life. Like the saying above says. Some people simply don't succeed because they fail to show up...to life. Procrastinating and putting off your goals is the easiest way to wake up one day thinking I hate my life, I don't like my home, I hate my job....then they get up and go and watch sports, or movies or go out drinking. They forget about how much they hate their life for a little while until....the next morning and it starts all over again.

As a Business Teacher and Education Manager at RMIT University and as a private trainer I found the most fulfilling component of my job was mentoring and motivating my students and staff. Many people just need someone to show faith in them, and help them to put in place the steps they need to take to achieve their goals.

Active sport success

I am ecstatic to finally turn this passion into a website so hopefully I can encourage and assist anyone wanting to make some positive changes toward a better more fulfilling life.

It's not about having a perfect life.
It is about making the most of the life you have!!!
Life is a gift.
Now lets not waste a day of it!
